Shooting Time

What is the optimal time of day for capturing drone footage?

Cameras on both reasonably priced drones and more advanced models exhibit versatility in handling various lighting conditions, spanning from low light to bright sunshine (especially when using ND filters). Consider the desired lighting effects for your footage. Would a landscape be enhanced at dawn with elongated shadows and a golden hue? Does the water exhibit more appealing colours with a polarizing filter around midday? Begin to perceive a drone as a standard video camera, applying the same filming and cinematographic principles as you would when shooting on the ground.

While certain issues like white balance can be rectified in post-production, it is, of course, preferable to achieve lighting and colour accuracy as closely aligned with your final vision during the actual shoot.

Keep in mind that landscapes may appear two-dimensional when observed from above. Thus, contemplate positioning the sun lower in the sky, allowing any land relief to cast shadows. The angle of the light contributes to shaping the landscape, providing an opportunity to leverage it to your advantage.
